Serum Calcium Level in Active Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract
Hypercalcemia has been known to occur in associiltion with granulomatous diseases. Serum calcium concentration was measured in 47 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and 31 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease admitted to Jeonbug Naticnal University Hospital.
The results were as follows.
1. Mean serum calcium in patients with active tuberculosis was higher than in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and the level was 8.95mg/dl, 8.4mg/dl respectively.
2. Mean serum calcium in patients with active tuberculosis was higher than in control group supplemented with same dose of Vitamin D.
3. Hypercalcemia appears to be related to the activity of pulmonary tuberculosis and the intake of vitamin D, however the exact mechanism remains unknown.
